Robert Redford in indigo jeans

I am almost sure that every person owns at least one pair of jeans in their lifetime. It could be in their childhood, because their parents bought it, or they got it later in life. But most people probably own more than one. In developed countries, almost everyone goes through several pairs during childhood and their teenage years. I don't know a single person who doesn’t currently own at least one pair. Unfortunately, most people today wear skinny jeans made of stretchy synthetic fabric, which is very far from true denim, it's just dyed and washed to look similar.

Men inn 1950s wearing cuffed jeans.

If you want to understand how jeans should look and fit, we need to look back at least 40 years. To achieve this timeless look of effortless elegance, we should look at how people wore jeans from the 1950s to the 1980s. Check out Hollywood style icons like Marlon Brando, James Dean, Steve McQueen, or Alain Delon. The jeans should have a higher waist and a straight, semi-loose fit in the leg. Levi's 501xx from the 1950s is considered the holy grail and a gold standard for fit and quality. Many of the best jeans today are reproductions of that model. For perfect proportions, my definition of a high rise is 31-33 cm (12.2-13 in) for my height of 180 cm (5'11").

Today, almost every brand offers their version of jeans, and you likely have more options than ever before. Unfortunately, most of them come in an unflattering modern fit and are made from cheap fabric. It's not easy to find quality jeans with a great fit, so I’ve made a list of high-quality jeans with a perfect timeless fit that you can buy today.
