When we’re talking about casual style, the answer is much more complex than a simple yes or no. It depends on the number of layers, colors and fabrics you’re wearing.

This article is a continuation of my series about colors and these 5 simple rules should serve as a baseline for using colors in casual outfits.

Many people stick to neutral clothes because they’re unsure which colors work together and are afraid of making mistakes, so they’d rather play it safe.

Why a 1” width has such great appeal is because it doesn’t fill the entire belt loop. This makes it look effortless and elegant. Visually, a narrower belt also doesn’t cut the whole outfit in half. The main reason why regular belt widths (1.5” to 4 cm) are not a good choice, in my opinion, is that they stand out too much and overpower the entire midsection.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to colors, but there are certain visual rules that can help us make more harmonious looks, so I decided to explain the basic rules for styling colors, based on color theory. 

A lot of people like to wear toned-down, neutral outfits, but too often, they go a bit too far and make them very monotonous or even boring. Luckily, it’s possible to solve that with just one or two elements that have the same effect - they create contrast.

Why is a 1-inch belt often the best choice? It’s versatile and keeps your look clean and balanced. You’ll see how easy it is to pair with different trousers and outfits, and how the right buckle makes a subtle but noticeable difference.

If you choose a coat that is too fitted and formal, it won’t pair well with casual clothes and might look out of place. A perfect casual coat should have a roomy fit, have enough space to drape naturally and move comfortably, so you will look cosy and relaxed while wearing it.

When it comes to choosing which styles will work best for you, you need to consider your personal style, what pairs well with the clothes you wear most, and the situations in which you plan to wear them.

If you buy timeless, well-made garments, most of your wardrobe should last you a lifetime. Yet, finding your personal style and what really suits you is not that easy.
