The Ultimate Guide to the Best Type II Denim Jackets
I was searching for the perfect denim for a couple of years, and I tried on, bought, and re-sold too many of them. Most of them were too long for me in a size that fits my upper body, so this fall I decided it’s finally time to find the perfect fit. If I’m completely honest, I wanted a washed version, so when I saw that Fullcount just re-released a Type II in Darford wash, I checked the measurements and it looked like it could fit, so I ordered it hoping for the best. When it arrived and I put it on, it fit me, but it wasn’t as boxy as a Type II should be, and it was still too long.
I was so frustrated that I decided to spend a couple of hours creating a measurement chart to compare all Type II denim jackets made by quality brands. I soon realized there are only a few washed options made by those brands currently on the market. So I had to accept that I would have to get one in a darker wash than I had hoped for and achieve that worn-in look with wear. It will take some time, but I’m sure that in the end I’ll get there.
While doing research, I decided to make the ultimate guide to the best quality Type II denim jackets, so first I created a measurement chart where each model was chosen in the size with the most suitable shoulder and chest measurements for my upper body. From the chart, you can also see how different the proportions are, some jackets are much narrower (smaller chest measurements) and longer (body and sleeve measurements). These measurements also make it possible to tell which body type each style should fit. If you are tall and slim, look for styles with a narrower chest and longer body, if you are very short, look at those with the shortest body, or if you have an athletic build, look at those with the widest chest and shoulders.
My measurements chart to compare all the jackets.
For example, my upper body is in a size usually considered for someone taller than me, so I wanted a jacket with a wider, boxy fit and the shortest possible body. From the 21 jackets I analyzed, the proportions of four stood out: Fortela, Boncoura, Superstitch Paris, and OrSlow. All the others are longer in the body with a similar width, so their proportions don’t really work well for me. Based on all the measurements, I decided to go with a Cisco Type II jacket from Fortela, but more on that in the future.
