The Versatility of Boat Shoes and Deck Shoes
Classic boat shoes are a very casual style, and most people associate them with summer and spending time near water. They work best with shorts, but people also wear them with chinos and jeans, so they’re pretty versatile casual summer footwear. They also come in a wide range of colors, so you can usually find a version that works for you. I was never a fan of boat shoes, as they always seemed like a style that tries to be both formal and casual at the same time. The brown suede, leather, metal details, and white rubber just don’t work well together in my opinion.
I would always pick a deck shoe (canvas CVO) for very casual spring and summer style. They’re even more casual and cleaner, but serve the same function. You won’t slip on a deck or wet surfaces. In my opinion, they’re also more versatile, especially the white canvas version with a white rubber sole. This version of deck shoes is so clean it works with everything. Literally everything. Shorts in any color, same for trousers and jeans, even with a suit if you want to dress it down.
The only thing I try to avoid is wearing them with white trousers or all-white outfits as it can be a bit too much. In that case, I’d prefer an off-white or sand version if you want light contrast, or darker colors like navy or black if you want more contrast.
For the last couple of years, a few brands have started making a more minimalistic version of the boat shoe—I’d call them city moccasins. Most come in leather or suede, and the entire upper is made from a single material in one color. They’re usually also stripped of some traditional details, some remove the metal eyelets, and some even the side lacing. They also mostly come in muted tones: greys, browns, beiges, and black.
I have to admit, this style has grown on me and I’ve started to like them. I think they work great with elegant outfits but add a nice relaxed element. Loafers can usually make an elegant outfit feel a bit more casual, but these “city mocs” take it even a step further in terms of relaxed style, so I think they’re a great option for summer.
So when we talk about boat shoes, I think there are three different styles to consider: the classic boat shoe, the canvas deck shoe, and the city moccasin. Each offers a unique aesthetic, but all can be quite versatile. I’ve made a list of outfits to inspire you and show the different look of each style.
